Dealing With Political Stress

Watching the news, these days, can evoke a lot of damaging emotions. Especially with all the crime and the fact that no one, in the political hemisphere, is really proposing any real solutions.

Some suggestions for dealing with political stress follow.

First: "Do not get upset because of evildoers . . ." {Psalm 37:1 NASB}

Don't fret about it. Dwelling on hot button political topics is emotionally damaging. Think about something else.

Second: Reciting Scripture will help.

Examples:

"Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." {John 14:27 NIV}

". . . whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right . . . think about these things." {Philippians 4:8 NASB}

Recite Scripture out loud. Reciting two Scriptures is especially effective.

Third: using prayer can help.

"Is anyone among you in trouble? Then that person should pray." {James 5:13 NIRV}

Recognize that thoughts involving hot button political topics can be a spiritual attack. Resist the devil; don't help him.

Fourth: Remember: God is in control.

"The king's heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He pleases." {Proverbs 21:1 NASB}

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." {2 Timothy 2:1-4 NIV}

Pray for those in authority.

This will help you to retain a biblical perspective. This will, in turn, also help with your emotions.

Fifth: "Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people." {Proverbs 14:34 NKJV}

Recognize that this is how things are supposed to work. This will make it easier to not get upset over things.

Sixth: Avoid talking about hot button political topics—especially with those who may disagree with you. This doesn't accomplish anything and does cause unnecessary stress.

Seventh: Get your news from reputable sources: Apple News, MSN, CBS, NBC, PBS etc. Allowing yourself to believe conspiracy theories and assorted nonsense makes you much more vulnerable to spiritual attacks.

Finally: Limit the amount of time you spend listening to news stories you find disturbing. You don't need insomnia and there is no reason to add to your stress.
