Knee Pain From Torn Cartilage: There is a Solution

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on any medical issue. But I've had three incidents of torn cartilage in my left knee and now it is as good as new!1

The first time I twisted my knee on a slippery floor. I hobbled to the doctor who told me to just stretch out the knee. That was not fun, but it did resolve the problem. Until . . .

The second time I injured my knee: I was playing badminton and the cartilage again tore. This was at a community college and they referred me to a orthopaedic surgeon who was going to do surgery the traditional way: This was before arthroscopic surgery was widely available. It would have been a major invasive procedure and I suspect the long term results would not have been good to say the least!

Fortunately, my mother worked in a hospital and insisted I see another surgeon for the new arthroscopic surgery. The surgery was a success and I was able to walk the same day. It was nice to be able to walk again as a young man should—instead of again hobbling. And the knee was fine until . . .

The third time I injured my knee: I again twisted my knee. Afterwards, I felt a sharp pain every time I took a step. So I again had arthroscopic surgery. The orthopaedist said it looked like a grenade had gone off inside my knee. I woke up after surgery to hear a nurse say the surgery had gone well. But . . .

The knee now hurt constantly. Although the sharp pain I used to feel whenever I took a step was gone, it was replaced by a dull throbbing pain that occurred all the time—even when I was sitting down. The pain was worse and the doctor had no solution.

The pain lasted several years. By this time, I was a Christian and I prayed for God to remove the pain. The pain got worse!

I never asked for pain medication and none was offered. But I came to the conclusion on my own that the pain was a good thing. And I was right. The pain caused my muscles to tense, stabilizing the joint, so that the joint could heal. Today my left knee feels as good as my other knee. The joint has completely healed.

If I had taken pain medication, I probably would have needed knee replacement surgery by now.

However, there were three other things that really helped the knee and none of these were mentioned by the doctor.

First, walking on uneven surfaces. I noticed that, whenever I went for a walk in the park, afterward my knee felt much better. And after mowing the lawn, there was a huge difference! By contrast, walking on cement or asphalt made the knee hurt. The benefit was a result of range of motion: Walking on uneven surfaces caused the knee to move in all directions.

Second, I found that I had to stop using the plastic orthotic shoe inserts that I used before my last surgery. My knee wouldn't stop hurting until I did.

Third, I did my own research and started taking Glucosamine Chondroitin tablets. This helped a lot. Several years ago, I tried to stop taking them and the knee started to hurt again So I still take them today. The brand that works the best for me is the Kirkland Brand; the store brand for Costco stores. If you're at all interested, I recommend clicking on this Amazon.com link.

I should mention that wearing cushioning—preferably running type—shoes is also essential.

One thing my doctor said that was helpful was not to use weights, which I had been planing to do.

Also, daily stretching exercises helped. The doctor had mentioned "range of motion" exercises.

So my knee does feel good today. I hope this article will be helpful to you. Good luck!
